Hapten - The Meaning
The term “Hapten” is derived from the Greek word “Haptein”, which means “to fasten” and is used
in the scientific fields of Immunology, Clinical Chemistry & Molecular Biology.
The word “Hapten” was coined by the famous Nobel Laureate Dr. Karl Landsteiner in 1921.Haptens are small molecules, which when combined with larger carriers e.g., proteins, can elicit an immune response and generate antibodies.
Haptens have varied utility in the development and design of detection tools in the fields of clinical diagnostics, therapeutics, molecular biology, food diagnostics/safety, agricultural diagnostics, veterinary diagnostics, biochemicals and environmental monitoring.
Karl Landsteiner
1868 - 1943
It was Karl Landsteiner who first researched on the attachment of small organic molecules (he called them “Haptens”) to proteins, that became the foundation for future immunological research into the nature of antibody-combining sites, antigenic determinants and antibody–antigen binding forces.
Karl Landsteiner’s main interest was in the chemical and immunological basis of sensitization and Allergy. Later, along with Merrill W Chase, he showed that sensitivity to certain chemicals was induced by allergens formed by combinations of Haptens with host proteins. Per the enlightenment from Landsteiner’s ideas and technical know-how, Hapten humbly believes that “Business potential lies in human connection”, just as Hapten found in its name.

Graduated from the University of Vienna Medical School.
